For many, a new year signifies a brand-new start. Most people approach the new year by setting resolutions or goals. This is so that we can do a better job of accomplishing our goals compared to the previous year.
For some, this means setting goals around finances, relationships, health, and personal development. Goals are meant to guide us. They serve as our road map to accomplishing our dreams.
Let’s be honest, within a few weeks into the New Year most people forget about their resolutions.
Instead of New Year’s Resolutions, let’s develop new habits for a lifetime.
Here are 10 Habits to Start in this New Year
1. Write Out Your Goals
One of the ways to get clear on your goals is to make a focused list around the things you want to achieve. Set aside time to– write out your goals and make a list of all the details around the goal. Be intentional about what you want the experience to be. Know the specifics of that goal. Get very specific. Write an action list about what you want your goals to be. Make then SMART. Specific-Measurable-Achievable, Realistic-Timely.
2. Change The Way How You Speak to Yourself
Your thoughts create your feelings. Feelings create your actions Thoughts may pop into your mind about how you are not good enough. Learn how to immediately replace those thoughts with positive words about yourself. Whatever we say to ourselves will ultimately become our reality and what we ultimately believe will then become our experience. One of the ways to change what you say to yourself is by doing Mirror work (What is Mirror Work? (louisehay.com))– hypnosis as a way to change the brain. Change the perspective of your thoughts. Start thinking more positively.
3. Find People Who Expand Your Awareness of Possibility
Be intentional about the persons you are spending time with. Who are you following on social media? Who and what is infiltrating your mind? Are they expanding you or contracting you? Allow yourself to be expanded by the people who have achieved what you are looking to achieve.
4. Learn One New Thing Every Day
Commit to learning something new every day. New methodology or success principle. Your knowledge of something new will be so exponential. Ask yourself what did you learn today?
5. Take Care of Yourself
Developing healthy habits around nutrition, exercise, hydration, and quality sleep is beneficial to your overall health and well-being. Take time to practice mindfulness and self-awareness. For people with busy schedules and limited time, one must be intentional about developing a habit around self-care. Plan to fit this into your schedule and that begins with removing all the distractions. It could be as simple as monthly massages and facials, attending a Pilates class, going for a walk in the park, or daily meditation.
6. Learn To Prioritize
Do what needs to be done. And that thing needs to be important. Focus on things that matter. Stop wasting time on things that do not matter. Spend the time to set up a priority list and then next to that write a list of your actions that will move the needle. On Sundays, I take time to plan the week and create a checklist of the most important actions. I also take this time to check off my list of tasks that were completed the prior week.
7. Stop Wasting Time on Faux Hustle
Some people thrive on being busy. Ask yourself what are you spending your time on? What is keeping you busy? Are you doing the things that are moving the needle on your personal goals and in your business? Are you systematically taking the actions or are you going around in circles and not getting anything done?
8. Develop A Healthy Dose of Self-Assurance
Self-celebrate and promote your important work. Taking time to celebrate your wins and promote your important work builds self-confidence. Create an accountability group and share what you are working on – creating – developing and building. This helps you to get more confident in the area that you are working on- for example in the online space. You will not be successful in the online space if you are not promoting yourself.
9. Treat your Personal Space with Respect
It is easy to get caught up in the busyness of life and neglect your personal space. Get in the habit of keeping your personal space clean, organized, inviting, and welcoming. Clear the clutter by getting rid of unnecessary paper and anything that does not belong in that area, or you do not need. Get in the habit of organizing your space so that you can think clearly. Developing this new habit will have a spillover effect into other areas such as raising your level of self-confidence, reducing stress, helping in managing activities and deadlines efficiently, and promoting more positive energy and peace from having an organized space.
10. Slow Down When Making Decisions
Slowing down when making decisions will lead to making better decisions. Making costly mistakes can hurt you in the long run. When making important decisions take a step back and look at the big picture. Investigate the situation in detail. Examine the pros and cons. Evaluate options that you might have not yet considered or explored. Next, select the best possible solution. Speak with a trusted party about your solution. Finally, take action.
In Summary...
Setting goals around finances, relationships, health, and personal development requires discipline. It requires one to be intentional, practical, and focused.
It begins with writing down your goals using the SMART method described earlier. Think about the words you say to yourself, prioritize your task and learning one new thing each day can help move the needle in other areas of your life.
Learn to treat your personal space with respect so that you will have the clarity to make empowering decisions.
As you begin this new year, I hope that the tips shared in this post will help you develop healthy habits that will change your life.
